Our client, a Canadian based Insurance company, is looking for a Senior Financial Accountant to join their team. This is a one year contract with the potential to extend into fulltime. The Senior Financial Accountant will have strong technical knowledge, skills and working experience with a regulated insurance company, its branches and the related regulatory filings. The individual will require minimal supervision and may be responsible for overseeing some work of others. The individual will have strong communication and interpersonal skills, combined with a minimum of 5 years experience gained ideally in an Insurance (Property &Casualty or re-insurance) environment and will possess a CA, CMA or CGA designation. Experience working within the Property & Casualty insurance industry would be considered an asset.
Responsibilities
- Within a team of financial accountants, responsible for the monthly accounting for two branch entities and one domestically-domiciled insurance company, including the recording of all transactions, preparation of the trial balance and reconciliations and reporting to head office.
- Preparation of quarterly OSFI financial statement filings (P&C-1, P&C-2) including all detailed schedules and underlying reconciliations; assistance with monitoring of the entities’ regulatory capital.
- Preparation of quarterly internal and annual audited financial statements including the related notes, in compliance with IFRS
- Preparation of various account reconciliations
- Preparation of external filings and responses to regulatory and head office requests for all entities
- Respond to ad-hoc requests as needed
- Other duties as assigned including compliance documentation and reinsurance accounting
Qualifications
- A University degree or College diploma, combined with a CA, CMA or CGA designation;
- A track record of a minimum of 5 years of progressively senior financial experience, ideally gained within the insurance or financial services sector;
- Strong practical understanding of the finance function, combined with a clear understanding of general accounting;
- Experience working with PeopleSoft and other automated systems;
- Very strong knowledge of software programs in a Windows environment (Excel and Word);
- Strong organizational and analytical abilities combined with a good business sense;
- Ability to operate in a dynamic and changing environment;
- Strong initiative and the ability to meet new challenges with a positive and proactive attitude;
- Strong time management skills and attention to details as well as the big picture.
