Corporate Tax Accountant
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: $55,000 - $60,000 (dependant on experience) + bonus potential (10% - 15%)
Location: Toronto
Reports to: Controller
The Opportunity
The Corporate Tax Accountant will be responsible for the preparation of income, commodity, premium and excise tax filings and reconciliations. The candidate will have strong communication and interpersonal skills, combined with a minimum of 2 years of experience gained primarily in a tax role within a financial services environment. The candidate should have obtained or be in pursuit of obtaining a CA, CMA or CGA designation. Our Client is a large insurance company - the ideal candidate will have experience working with domestic insurance companies and branches as well as the related tax and regulatory filings.
Responsibilities
- Prepare various annual/monthly income tax, premium tax, excise, and provincial commodity tax returns
- Prepare quarterly income tax and premium tax provisions
- Prepare and monitor adequacy of monthly remittances to tax authorities
- Reconcile and maintain various tax general ledger balances
- Assist with the monthly and quarterly accounting including the posting of transactions, preparation of the trial balance and reconciliations
- Assist with the preparation of the quarterly regulatory financial reporting
- Assist with the development and maintenance of appropriate tax policies and practices
- Apply general and specific tax knowledge to various day to day functions including both compliance and non-compliance responsibilities
- Identify opportunities for improvement of internal controls
- Liaise with internal/external auditors
- Respond to ad-hoc requests as needed
- Other duties as assigned, including special projects
Qualifications
- A university degree in a related field, combined with a CA, CMA or CGA designation, or must be close to completion of an accounting designation
- A minimum of 2 years related experience, ideally gained within the insurance or financial services sector
- Strong practical understanding of the tax function, combined with a clear understanding of the overall finance function
- Knowledge of or ability to interpret and apply the Canadian Income Tax Act to tax principles
- Experience working with PeopleSoft is an asset
- Very strong knowledge of software programs in a Windows environment
- Strong organizational and analytical abilities combined with a good business sense
- Ability to operate in a dynamic and changing environment
- Strong initiative and the ability to meet new challenges with a positive and proactive attitude
- Strong time management skills and attention to details
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to function well within a team environment
