Accounting Manager - Not for Profit
Start Date: September/October 2011
Salary: $65,000 - $71,000 (dependant on experience)
Location: Toronto
Reports to: Director of Finance
The Opportunity
The Accounting Manager at this NPO will be responsible for assisting, administering and coordinating with unquestionable integrity, ethics and standards, the Company financial reporting consistent with GAAP and the objectives, policies and standards established by the Company. In addition, the Accounting Manager will participate in the preparation of all internal and external monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
Responsibilities
- Manages the general ledger accounting, financial controls, reporting, forecasting and budgeting procedures necessary to operate effectively in a high growth environment
- Provide strategic analysis as required to drive improved decision making
- Works with and coordinates communication with a variety of internal and external parties (city/provincial/federal agencies, Board of Directors etc.)
- Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of financial information
- Implement and manage internal controls with respect to financial policies, processes and procedures
- Provide advice and guidance on all accounting matters including financial systems, record keeping analysis and reporting
- Coordinate the year-end audit and preparation of audited financial statements
- Responsible for the preparation of monthly financial statements and external reporting to financial institutions, ensuring that all reporting requirements are met
- Provide input to decisions regarding overall operation of the organization, its financial health and for active contribution to its strategic and annual plans
- Support new systems or project selections and implement them from a strategic finance and internal control perspective
- Responsible for tax planning and compliance with Federal, Provincial and local corporate, payroll and other applicable taxes
- Supervision and support of the Office Administrator’s function including backup, hiring and performance management
- Ability to work proficiently with a variety of software applications e.g. Microsoft office Suite, Adagio, Insync Payroll/HR system
- Supervision and support of the Payroll Coordinator including backup, hiring, performance management
- In the absence of the Payroll Coordinator, must be able to perform all payroll functions
- Oversees workload of department for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the work force and meeting operational requirements
- Maintains a wide variety of payroll information, files and records in written and electronic formats for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference and audit trail for compliance
- Facilitates meetings for the purpose of identifying appropriate actions, developing recommendations and supporting other staff and attends meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information required to perform functions
- Responds to written and verbal inquiries for the purpose of providing information and/or direction
- Other related duties required as assigned

Qualifications
- Must possess a professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA)
- Must have experience with not for profit accounting regulations and not for profit financial reporting
- Educational/professional qualifications, which give evidence of the intellectual ability to deal with complex operational and strategic issues
- Excellent business and financial acumen
- Minimum 5 years accounting and payroll experience
- Strong knowledge of Canadian GAAP and CRA regulations for charitable organizations and foundations
- Strong technical skills, with the ability to conceptualize what the standards call for and how to apply them
- Experienced in both financial and fund accounting and reporting
- Experience indicative of an in depth understanding and ability to apply not for profit accounting requirements
- Supervisory/manager experience with ability to motivate team and strong teambuilding skills are a must
- Strong knowledge of payroll systems, internal controls and management
- Ability to prepare ad hoc reports using Microsoft Excel
- Strong customer service focus
- Highly conscientious, along with an energetic and mature approach to his or her work
- Superior organizational skills and ability to work independently
- Required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to defend positions internally and externally, in a professional manner
- Strong analytical skills combined with creative and innovative problem solving skills
- Strong knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft applications
- Knowledge of Adagio G/L, A/R, A/P applications and Ceridian Payroll would also be an asset
