Corporate Accountant
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: $55,000 - $65,000 (dependant on experience) + bonus potential
Location: Toronto
Reports to: Director, Financial Reporting
The Opportunity
The Corporate Accountant position is a new role created to meet the increased reporting requirements of a rapidly growing public real estate investment trust. The Corporate Accountant will report directly to the Director of Financial Reporting. The individual will also be required to manage the corporate accounting needs of the REIT’s management company and work with the Director of Property Accounting and the REIT’s property accounts on management company matters affecting the property accounting.
Depending on experience level the individual may also become involved in internal controls development, documentation and testing.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Director of Financial Reporting with the preparation of quarterly financial statements and MD&A
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for corporate accounts
- Prepare and record treasury entries including recording investments, interest revenue, credit facility draws and interest expense
- Maintain and update mortgage continuity schedule
- Prepare monthly distribution entries, including distribution reinvestment plan (DRIP) and update associated continuity schedules
- Maintain records for the REIT’s deferred unit plan (DUP) and assist in meeting reporting requirements
- Maintain equity continuity schedules and liaise with Computershare as required
- Assist with weekly preparation of rolling 6 week cash flow
- Prepare Stats Canada reporting
- Assist in the preparation of annual subsidiary financial statements and the preparation of annual corporate and partnership tax returns
- Update quarterly credit facility compliance certificate
- Prepare and record monthly management company charges
- Prepare and post payroll entries and reconcile payroll registers to general ledger
- Prepare monthly GST return for the management company
- Assist in the annual budget process
- Analyze budget to actual variances for management company costs
- Preparing and analyzing balance sheet accounts, continuity schedules and variance analysis on an ad-hoc basis as required by senior management
- Assist in the implementation of more complex accounting policies and process improvement initiatives
- Support IT department in the testing and implementation of new accounting functions/module as the REIT converts from Yardi 5.0 to 6.0
- Work with property accounting department on a proactive basis to identify issues regarding the monthly financial reports and identify process improvements
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- CGA/CMA designation or in final stages of a professional accounting designation
- Three years of progressive accounting experience; ideally in a corporate accounting role
- Public company experience is an asset
- Proven strong organizational, multi-tasking, technical and communication skills
- Computer skills in Excel, Word and other Microsoft Office Programs
- Working knowledge of Yardi 6.0 is a definite asset
