Salary: $85,000 - $105,000 (dependant on experience)

The Opportunity
National level health and fitness chain is looking for a highly motivated controller to join their progressive team. The Controller will report directly to the president and oversee the financial operation of the Canadian division. The Controller will be expected to be the “driver” of all accounting/finance functions for this growing company. The Controller will serve as a "change agent" for the company. The Controller will assume responsibility for all financial operations including financial and management reporting, general ledger maintenance, budgeting and variance analysis, all aspects of accounting, banking, cash management, and for developing effective financial control systems and accounting processes.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations for the accounting and finance department
- Manage a team of 3 – 5 in the area of accounting and payroll
- Manage treasury functions and manage all bank accounts/cash flow
- Timely preparation of monthly financial statements, profit loss, balance sheet, and cash flow working papers, reconciliation of receivables, etc.
- Prepare annual budgeting and financial forecasting models
- Direct and coordinate company financial planning and budget management functions
- Responsible for the entire financial management and reporting process
- Manage all issues related to accounting software including; GL account management, set-up of codes in all modules, changes to and development of financial statements, financial reporting, data backups and integrity, managing consultants, etc.
- Prepare financial analysis as required
- Develop strong accounting systems for consistent, reliable and accurate results
- Design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the department's goals and objectives
- Develop procedures and policy
- Periodically audit systems to ensure processes and procedures are effective
- Hire and train department staff as required
- Maintain good working relationships with vendors and outside suppliers/contractors
- Prepare monthly and annual financial audit file and deal with auditors as required
- Develop strategic direction and define capital spending requirements
- Participate in special projects as required
Qualifications
This is an exciting and challenging position in a growth oriented company. It is critical that the candidate be excited by the opportunity to work in a fast paced, unstructured environment. The candidate will need to thrive in a “hands on” position, as they will be solely responsible for the entire accounting department.
- At least 5 years in a senior accounting or controller position
- Canadian accounting designation (CA, CGA, CMA)
- Outstanding organizational skills with an obsession for detail
- Knowledge of AccPac software is preferred
- Enthusiastic, high energy, confident, independent (ability to take ownership of all accounting and reporting duties in an unstructured environment)
- Strategic level thinker with an ability to analyze numbers in terms of their impact on the big picture
- Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-changing, aggressive and entrepreneurial environment with evolving systems and procedures
- A motivated, self-starter with excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work closely with the President to support him with all finance/accounting needs, reporting requirements, etc.
- Proven ability and expertise setting up accounting systems and internal controls
- Retail industry experience is an asset
