CONTROLLER
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: $60,000 - $75,000 (dependant on experience), plus bonus potential
Location: Markham
Reports to: President
The Opportunity
Our client, a growth-oriented, private company in the licensed apparel and hard goods business (representing premium licenses), is looking for a hands-on Controller. The company is based in Markham. The Controller will report directly to the President and will be responsible for the entire accounting function. The Controller will be expected to be the “driver” of all accounting/finance functions for this growing company. The controller will assume responsibility for all financial operations including financial and management reporting, general ledger maintenance, budgeting and variance analysis, all aspects of accounting, reporting to investors, banking, cash management, and for developing effective financial control systems and accounting processes.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations for the accounting and finance department
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly and annual financial statements including appropriate analysis
- Prepare annual budgeting and financial forecasting models
- Direct and coordinate company financial planning and budget management functions
- Responsible for the entire financial management and reporting process
- Preparation of journal entries, maintaining accurate general ledger and preparing account reconciliations
- “Hands on” responsibility for a/r, a/p, payroll, tax remittances and tax returns
- Develop strong accounting systems for consistent, reliable and accurate results
- Tracking, monitoring, and accounting for all license and royalty payments, as specified in license agreements
- Implement financial controls for tracking of royalty and license payments
- Prepare financial analysis for contract negotiations and investment decisions
- Recommend benchmarks for measuring the financial and operating performance of divisions and departments
- Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget.
- Design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the department's goals and objectives
- Establish and implement short- and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures
- Work with department managers and corporate staff to develop a five year business plan for the company.
- Special projects and other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:

The candidate will need to thrive in a “hands on” position, as they will be solely responsible for the entire accounting department. The candidate must possess the following education, experience and attributes:
- Degree in accounting or designation (CA, CGA, CMA)
- Manufacturing or distribution background (exposure to inventory is required)
- Experience with license agreements and royalty/license payments would be preferred
- Knowledge of Simply Accounting or similar accounting software is preferred
- Highly organized and detail oriented
- Enthusiastic, high energy, confident, independent (ability to take ownership of all accounting and reporting duties in an unstructured environment)
- Strategic level thinker with an ability to analyze numbers in terms of their impact on the big picture
- Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-changing, aggressive and entrepreneurial environment with evolving systems and procedures
- A motivated, self-starter with excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work closely with the President to support him with all finance/accounting needs, reporting requirements, etc.
