Controller
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: $110,000 - $125,000 (dependant on experience) + bonus potential
Location: Toronto
Reports to: CFO
The Opportunity
The Controller is responsible for ensuring that the financial reporting and accounting procedures are accurate and comply with generally accepted accounting principles. The Controller supervises the corporate finance function and reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and assists on all strategic and tactical matters as they relate to financial reporting, management reporting, budget management and internal controls.
Responsibilities
- Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close through the effective management of the accounting cycle
- Assist with preparation of draft MD&A and Financial Statements on a quarterly basis
- Assist with development of the annual project and operating budgets, in a timely manner
- Assist with development of the ERP software package for sites and head office incorporating, purchasing, AP, AR, committed costs, site maintenance, project management, periodic reporting and corporate reporting
- Assist with the management and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities for the organization including: daily/weekly/monthly reporting, organizational revenue/expense and balance sheet reports, reports to government and tax agencies as required
- Develop and maintain internal controls over financial reporting of the organisation and to safeguard financial assets of the organisation
- Coordinate the review and audit by independent auditors ensuring all audit issues are resolved, and all compliance issues are met, and the preparation of the annual financial statements is in accordance with Canadian GAAP/IFRS and all Federal and Provincial laws
- Maintain the inventory of all fixed assets
- Assist with tax compliance
- Provide guidance and counsel to corporate accounting staff
- Recommend and implement approved accounting policies and procedures
- Work with the CFO to ensure adequate cash availability to meet the organisation's needs
- Assist with business insurance plans and health care coverage analysis
- Train the Finance department and other staff on raising awareness and knowledge of financial management matters
- Establish and implement short and long-term departmental goals and objectives
- Assist in the development and negotiation of contracts
Qualifications
- Must have an accounting designation or in final stages of a professional accounting designation (CA/CMA/CGA)
- Completion of a bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience
- Must have mining experience
- Must have a minimum of 5 years experience at an Accounting Manager or Controller level
- Must have knowledge of IFRS
- Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations
- Knowledge of short and long-term budgeting and forecasting
- Knowledge of general office software, general ledger software and integrated ERPs
- Ability to foster and cultivate business opportunities and partnerships
- Ability to create and assess financial statements and budget documents
- Ability to recognize and be responsive to the needs of all clients of the organization
- Attention to detail, strong analytical skills and effective time-management
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form
- Work requires willingness to work a flexible schedule
